Judging Books by their Covers réfléchit à la nature et à l'importance du livre comme objet du quotidien. L'exposition présente un ensemble d'œuvres variées allant de photographies de grand format à des représentations picturales de couvertures de romans à l'eau de rose, où le livre et sa jaquette sont recontextualisés.
Rassemblant des œuvres de Hans-Peter Feldmann, récipiendaire du Prix Hugo Boss 2010, Lorraine Oades, artiste de Montréal, Marc Joseph Berg, Gayle Johnson et R.B. Kitaj, l'exposition met l'accent sur le design et les qualités esthétiques des livres imprimés - des caractéristiques qui contribuent à en faire des véhicules privilégiés de savoirs, omniprésents au quotidien. Bien qu'elle n'aborde pas directement la question du passage au format électronique, cette transition lui sert inévitablement de contexte. En ce sens, les œuvres sont également porteuses d'une réflexion sur les effets de la dématérialisation du livre.

L'exposition Judging Books by their Covers se tient au moment du Festival littéraire Metropolis bleu. En collaboration avec le festival, SBC est heureuse d'accueillir un événement mis sur pied par le Talisman Theatre : Theatre in Translation. L'actrice renommée Sylvie Drapeau lira des extraits des pièces La liste et Le Carrousel, en français et en anglais. L'événement est animé par Emma Tibaldo de Playwrights' Workshop Montréal, en compagnie de la traductrice Shelley Tepperman et de l'auteure Jennifer Tremblay. Articulating the nature and significance of books as objects in our lives, Judging Books by their Covers presents a group of artworks that range from large-scale photographs to paintings of pulp fiction covers in which artists have represented and recontextualized the book and its cover.
Featuring the work of 2010 Hugo Boss Prize winner Hans-Peter Feldmann, Montreal artist Lorraine Oades, Marc Joseph Berg, Gayle Johnson and R. B. Kitaj, the exhibition considers the design and aesthetic qualities of printed books that make them effective both as avatars of knowledge and as a ubiquitous presence in the everyday world. While the exhibition's focus is not the current transition to publishing in digital form, this change is an inevitable part of its general context. In this sense, these works may therefore serve as a vehicle for considering the implications of the book's dematerialization.

Judging Books by their Covers was organized to coincide with this year's Blue Metropolis Literary Festival. In conjunction with the festival, SBC is pleased to host Talisman Theatre's literary event: Theatre in Translation. Actress Sylvie Drapeau will read excerpts from La Liste and Le Carrousel in French and English. The event will be animated by Emma Tibaldo from Playwrights' Workshop Montréal with translator Shelley Tepperman and playwright Jennifer Tremblay. For more information contact www.bluemetropolis.org
