L’exposition Good Gets Better est la première exposition personnelle de Daniel Barrow à Montréal et réunira des dessins et des projections de 2007 à aujourd’hui. Dans le cadre de cette exposition, une performance, Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry (2008), sera présentée au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal le 16 mars à 19 h.

Depuis 1993, Barrow crée et adapte des récits de magazines bédé pour des animations manuelles, d’abord en réalisant, puis en superposant, projetant et manipulant quantité de dessins, afin de raconter une histoire. Combinant papier coloré, encre de couleur, crayon feutre, crayon mine et crayon de couleur, l’artiste travaille avec une palette variée, allant des bruns boueux aux teintes vives, en passant par les pastels. Inspiré de l’illustration victorienne, des spectacles de lanternes magiques des débuts du cinéma, des magazines bédé et des cours d’un excentrique professeur d’histoire de l’art, Barrow est un conteur chevronné qui produit un univers d’histoires riches et étranges à l’aide de dessin, d’animation et de performance.

Daniel Barrow a récemment remporté le prestigieux prix artistique Sobey 2010. À propos du lauréat, le jury composé de cinq membres a déclaré que M. Barrow « a été choisi à l’unanimité… [Il] a créé au cours des quinze dernières années un monde fictionnel, autonome et unique, qui prend la forme de dessins, de contes et d’animations manuelles produites à l’aide d’une technologie obsolète (le rétroprojecteur) … Finement politiques et étrangement déchirants, ses récits pince-sans-rire parlent d’amour, de perte, d’identité et évoquent la culture médiatique. »

Né à Winnipeg où il a grandi, l’artiste s’est récemment installé à Montréal. Barrow a régulièrement exposé son travail au Canada et à l’étranger. Il a présenté des performances au Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), à PS1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), au Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), dans le cadre de l’International Film Festival Rotterdam et du TBA Festival 2009 du Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, ainsi qu’au British Film Institute (Londres). En plus d’avoir remporté le prix artistique Sobey, Barrow a été récipiendaire du prix Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton 2007 du Conseil des Arts du Canada et du prix Images pour la meilleure œuvre nouveaux médias canadienne du festival Images 2008. The exhibition Good Gets Better, Daniel Barrow’s first solo show in Montreal will showcase drawings and projections from 2007 to present. As part of this exhibition, a special performance by Daniel Barrow entitled Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry (2008) will be presented at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal on March 16 at 7 p.m.

Since 1993, Barrow has created and adapted comic book narratives to manual forms of animation by first creating, then layering, projecting and manipulating numerous drawings to tell a story. Using a combination of coloured paper, coloured ink, felt pen, pencil and pencil crayon, the artist uses a wildly ranging palette from muddy browns to pastels to brights in his work. Inspired by Victorian illustration, early cinema magic lantern shows, comic books and the lectures of an eccentric art history professor, Barrow is a master storyteller who conjures a universe of richly odd histories using drawing, animation and performance.

Barrow was the winner of the prestigious 2010 Sobey Art Award. In their official statement, the five-member jury described Mr. Barrow as its "unanimous choice. Over the past 15 years [he] has created a unique, self-sustaining fictional world composed of drawing, storytelling and manual animation of the antiquated technology of the overhead projector… Wry, politically astute and strangely heartbreaking, his comic narratives address love, loss, gender and media culture."

Born and raised in Winnipeg, the artist recently relocated to Montreal. Barrow has exhibited widely in Canada and abroad. He has performed at The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), PS1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), The International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s 2009 TBA festival, and the British Film Institute (London). In addition to the Sobey Art Award, Barrow is the 2007 winner of the Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton award and the 2008 winner of the Images Festival’s Images prize for best Canadian media artwork. Barrow is represented by Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, Toronto.
